MCSA joins 10 other Partners in Europe-wide Beyond Barriers Project on Research Inclusion
Beyond Barriers is a Horizon Europe project working to make research careers more equitable and inclusive by examining the structural barriers that can limit opportunities for underrepresented and marginalised researchers. The project brings together research institutions and citizen science organisations to combine evidence, lived experience, and participatory approaches in developing practical recommendations, tools, and inclusive practices for the European Research Area. Its approach is grounded in meaningful participation and co-creation, with the aim of ensuring that researchers affected by these barriers have an active role in shaping the solutions.

The Norway-based migrant research organization Migrant Citizen Science Association (MCSA) is joining an international consortium of 11 partners from 8 countries in Europe in the newly awarded Beyond Barriers Research Project. The initiative, funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe framework, is aimed at “Building Bridges for Equal Opportunities for Underrepresented and Marginalized Researchers in the European Research Area.”
In its call expectations, the project aims to “Investigate the specific barriers faced by researchers from at least three underrepresented and marginalized groups at different stages of their careers, starting from the gender perspective and considering other discrimination grounds.”
Ten European countries will be the subject of empirical research to build on existing research and gather quantitative and qualitative data, as well as personal testimonies. These ten countries include: Norway, Latvia, France, Belgium, Czechia, Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, Greece and Spain.
The project will develop concrete tools and deliver evidence-based recommendations on how to design inclusive institutional plans and shape wider European policy. It will also systematically disseminate these results to the key actors in the European Research Areas (ERA) and policy-makers in European Union (EU).
An all-partners General Assembly of the research consortium will be held at the University of Oslo on September 7 to 8, 2026. This first meeting will officially launch the project, establish consortium governance, and initiate key management and ethical workflows.
